Maryland Herb Farm Launches Spring Wellness Day To Encourage Healthy Lifestyles
Elkton, MD (PRWEB) April 27, 2006 -- Ann and Bill Stubbs are no strangers to healthy lifestyles, and have been promoting natural healing and wellness on their herb farm for decades through herbal lectures and luncheons. Every year for the past five years, they have hosted a “Wellness Day” on their 130 acre historic farm in the spring. This year’s celebration, dubbed SPA Day, will be held on Saturday, May 13th, and features workshops on Meditation, Massage, Yoga and Cooking with Soy, along with two gourmet herbal lunch sessions in the Stubbs’s home, a beautifully restored 18th century provincial plantation log house. Tickets are $40 and reservations required.
“This grows in scope every year,” said Ann, whose friends encouraged her years ago to begin holding the events at the farm, which also has a bed and breakfast cottage, a gift shop barn where various herbal classes are held and a beautiful country garden, which includes a 429-year old Sycamore tree that spreads its branches over the house. Attendees will be broken up into three groups to attend 45-minute sessions with each speaker at 10am, 12:55 and 2 pm. “Lunch will be served in the house, but the various classes will be held around the grounds and in the barn,” Ann said.
A Meditation session will be conducted by Scott Lewis in “The Granary” section of the barn. This is his 3rd year doing wellness seminars at Sinking Springs, and his goal is to “de-mystify” meditation.
“I was introduced to mediation around 40 years ago,” noted Lewis, an information systems architect for a large computer consulting firm in Delaware. “We’ll give people a taste of breathing and relaxation techniques—basic meditation techniques in learning how to focus the mind.”
Massage will be conducted by licensed massage therapist Shirl Lotz Lord of Body/Mind & Spirit Massage Therapy in Newark, Delaware, who will delve into 5-minute-massage techniques for partners to give and receive, as well as hand and foot massage techniques that anyone can practice.
“I’ll be giving hands-on demonstrations of things people can use every day to reduce stress,” said Lord.
Another great stress-reducer is Yoga, which will be demonstrated in the spacious loft of the Sinking Springs barn by Cecil County resident, Patty Elliott, who teaches the Iyengar style of yoga. “It tends to be safer—more exact,” says Elliott, who offers beginner through advanced yoga classes at the Cecil County YMCA. “Yoga students feel a sense of release of tension, and we practice relaxation afterwards—it also strengthens the back and lengthens muscles,” she said.
And what is a healthy lifestyle without healthy eating habits? Polly Grimaldi, author of Soy and Me, (a compilation of the “history and mystery” of soy from the The Right Way by Polly series) will offer tips and information on how to cook with soy, and promises some tasty dishes to sample from her famous quick and easy soy and tofu recipes.
There will also be a NIKKEN wellness booth featuring natural magnetic and far-infrared energy technologies to improve sleep and promote wellness, along with naturally purified water and whole-food nutrition products.
