National Association of Chronic Disease Directors Joins Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease in Releasing "Keeping America Healthy," a Roadmap to Curb

Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 9, 2008 -- The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) today joined the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD) in releasing a new resource for policymakers and health experts titled "Keeping America Healthy: A Guide To Successful Programs." The publication, which was compiled by the PFCD with support from its members, showcases public and private programs from across the country that have proven successful in promoting healthy behaviors and reducing the burden of disease.

NACDD is actively engaged in the fight against chronic disease as a member of the PFCD.

"The science of prevention and control of chronic disease needs to inform public policy for the health of all Americans," said David Hoffman, NACDD policy chair. "State-based chronic disease prevention efforts, an important component of our progress to date, are prominently displayed in this new Promising Practices guide. It is essential that these practices be recognized and supported if we are ever going to impact the epidemic of chronic disease."

"As a Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease board member, I am proud of its newest publication 'Keeping America Healthy: A Guide to successful Programs'," said John Robitscher, NACDD executive director. "This publication would not have the power it has without the hard work of our dedicated chronic disease directors working on behalf of every state and U.S. territory to reduce the burden of chronic disease.

"While management of chronic diseases is important to reduce the burden and cost of chronic conditions, most could be prevented with increased physical activity, smaller food portions and eliminating tobacco. The time is now for us all to invest in the prevention of chronic conditions. The nation's obesity rate has gone up by 250 percent since 1980; if the trend continues, one in three children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. It would be a terrible legacy for our generation if we outlive our children."

Keeping America Healthy examines programs across four settings - workplaces, schools, communities and health systems - and identifies nine "essential elements" for success. It also includes a catalog that can serve as examples of ways to change individual behavior, maintain or improve health and manage the staggering health care costs associated with chronic diseases. This new resource is available on the PFCD Web site at www.fightchronicdisease.org/promisingpractices.

"There is no template for promoting health and wellness that works in all settings or circumstances," said Ken Thorpe, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, and executive director of the PFCD. "It is our hope that 'Keeping America Healthy' will provide a roadmap for how to design and implement programs that will lower chronic disease rates and reduce the burden of illness on those already affected."
