What is Hard Water?

Hard water is mainly from underground sources. It is made hard by the minerals like calcium, manganese and magnesium carbonate that leach into it from surrounding rocks. Water that we use every day may be hard and we can see the evidence by the amount of scale that is left on our kettles and coffee machines.

This build-up of scale will eventually clog up pipes or appliances to the extent that their efficiency is badly affected. The efficiency of water heaters can be affected by up to 30% when there is scale present.

If the water is extremely hard, we will find that soap does not lather properly and dishes may be spotty. This is due to the heat of the water re-crystallizing the dissolved mineral crystals. People who use hard water to wash in are more likely to develop skin rashes, because the soap does not rinse off properly and changes the PH of the skin. Laundry is likely to be stiff and grey.

If your showerhead has a brownish rusty appearance it is due to scale build-up rather that actual rust. Certain minerals like iron even cause the water to smell, taste or look unpleasant if they are present in large amounts. When this happens some people will get their drinking water elsewhere, such as bottled water as an alternative.

Ensure that your drinking water is always safe ? get bottled water from Tranquil Water (http://www.tranquilwater.com.au) delivered to your home or office. Bottled water dispenser available for lease.
