Plastic Water Bottle Myth

If you recently received a warning in your email about the risks of breast cancer from drinking water left in plastic bottles that have been exposed to the heat of a car, rest assured that it's a myth. The email stated that cancer-causing chemicals could migrate from the plastic into the water.

In the USA at least, the plastic that is used for water bottles is graded to specific food contact grade safety standards. The FDA declares that the likelihood of developing cancer from the substances that leach from the plastic into the water is negligible. The water is also tested stringently to make sure it contains nothing that could harm our health.

However, testing done on PET plastic did find some minute amounts of substances that are considered harmful to humans, and it is believed those substances did leach from the plastic. But the amounts were so small that their presence is deemed safe. Dr Rolf Halden, an expert from the Bloomberg School of Public Health declares that humans are more at risk from bacterial infection in bottled water than chemical ones.

The best thing to do is to check your source of bottled water carefully to ensure that good quality control has been done in the production of bottled water. Reputable bottled water companies should have this information readily available on the company website or through phone enquiry.
