Bromate in Bottled Water

Bromate originates from the bromide ion and may form in some bottled water sources due to the disinfection process of ozonation. Even if the source water does have the bromide ion in it, very often the finished product carries no trace of bromate. It depends on a number of other factors such as how hard the water is, its alkalinity, PH and other chemistry factors as well as the ozone contact time. Another deciding factor is how much actual bromide ion was in the water to start with.

Ozonation has the same disinfectant effect on water that chlorination has. Some US states and many European countries have used it as a disinfectant for public water supplies for years, and is considered to be the better option as it leaves no taste or odour as chlorination often does.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) considers there is absolutely no risk from bromate to the public's health. It is considered to be completely harmless, even though a limit of 2 parts bromate residue per billion is currently being sought. This is simply to reassure the public of the total safety of their drinking water.

Thus consumers can go on drinking their bottled water quite happily, knowing that even if there is a trace of bromate in it, their health will not suffer in the slightest.
