Aluminium and Bottled Water

Since 8% of the earth's crust is made up of aluminium, it is no wonder that there is a small amount of it in our normal tap water. While none is added to bottled water it is actually used as a clarifying agent in town water supplies. While the National Health and Medical Research Council recommends that the amount in our drinking water should not exceed 0.01-0.02 parts per million, this is not intended as a health guideline, but is "based on aesthetic problems caused by post flocculation" - or clarification - of the water.

In any case, the guideline is not enforced and many municipal water supplies contain much more than that. Before we start to get worried, it is now considered that aluminium in the diet has nothing at all to do with the onset of Alzheimer's disease, as was once believed.

That is good news, since aluminium is also added to powdered milk products, bakery goods, confectionary and many antacids. Added to that, we handle it every day in cooking utensils, cooking foil, and other packaging. According to experts, since our bodies absorb 1% or less of the aluminium that we ingest, this does not pose a health hazard.
