Were you aware that there are 300,000 deaths a year in the United States that are linked to obesity? What a drain on the U. S. economy from health care costs which mount-up to $117 billion a year associated with obesity or overweight Americans.
There is $30 billion a year spent on weight loss products and the number of overweight or obese Americans increases each year. At the present, 64 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Over eating and the lack of activities help cause obesity.
It is far easier putting on weight than losing it later. Let's face it; an individual must purposely take steps, not to gain or to lose weight. Are you aware that the body has 30 to 40 billion fat cells and when more calories than are needed for energy are consumed it is stored within these fat cells?
There seems to be a boundless capacity to store fat and with every ounce of weight comes a burden on your back, hips and knees. There is a direct link to cardiovascular disease such as coronary artery, stroke, and high blood pressure.
There is an increased risk of developing cancers, (breast, colon, prostate, and uterus). Because Americans relate beauty and success with thinness, overweight adults may suffer psychological stress, discrimination, and reduced incomes.
It can not be assumed that every overweight person overeats. There are other factors:
*Genetics play a part also. Genes influence the amount of fat and its distribution. The family history accounts for your chances of obesity by thirty percent. What is eaten and your activities are influenced by the family. However, obesity is not hereditary. The family put in motion the eating habits and activities, but the diet and exercise ultimately determine your body weight.
*Eating food high in fat adds twice as many calories as proteins, or carbohydrates.
*Another factor of overweight is food being used in place of other things such as boredom, sadness, and coping with life.
*An aging adult's muscles decrease and fat account for a greater percentage of weight increase.
*Medications such as tricyclic antidepressants, insulin, hormones and corticosteroids, could cause an individual to gain weight.
According to Mayo Clinic, four national surveys showed women eating less than 1200 or men eating less than 1400 calories were not satisfied all day which will lead to most likely unwise snack chooses. Eating less than1200 calories does not allow the body to obtain certain nutrients such as zinc, folic acid and magnesium. Cut your fat calories to thirty percent and eat more vegetables, whole grain and fruits.
By eliminating 250 calories daily and adding a fast thirty minute walk four times a week will equal four pounds a month weight loss. Another way to lose weight is a brisk walk for more than forty minutes a day because the body uses fat as a direct fuel source during aerobic exercise.
Changing your eating habits and food choices will change your behavior. Popular weight-loss methods such as diet pills, over the counter or prescription, special foods or combination foods and very low calorie diets are not healthy weight loss programs and will not last or promote behavior changes. These programs do not work and in fact are unhealthy. The diet pills may cause heart attacks, seizure and stroke. Special foods or combination foods compromises nutrition and the low calories diet at first cause a water weight-loss but will last for a long periods of time and compromises your health.
Before considering any weight management program, make sure the daily nutrients are satisfied, set a reasonable goal of one to two pounds a week, make sure a health care physician is involved especially if other health problems are present, and the program should help in lifestyle changes and behavior.
