Water Filtration: Infiltrated
I?ll focus on earth?s most vital resource---water. Bacterial and chemical contamination, pollution and poor sanitation, these problems are not isolated cases in less developed countries, we too, are in the same predicament. In the situation at hand, we have a couple of options: first you go buy cases of distilled or bottled water or second, opt for home water filter systems, as most people would choose. However, one should note the device capacity being offered by water filtration companies, be it a faucet filter, a pitcher filter, an under sink filter or a whole house water filtration. In the succeeding paragraphs, I?ll raise the pros and cons of various filtration methods. Let us start with the straightforward method of boiling water to eliminate possible bacterial infectivity, that?s it. It doesn?t do anything with regard the industrial pollution, the taste and the odor of the water. But in less developed countries, this method is the only way to obtain potable water (water alone is hard to get what more purifying the same.) While browsing through the web, I encountered a MacGyver clip for surviving in an unknown location. The video was presented by a young boy using an empty water bottle, a string, a lighter, dried branches/leaves and water from a mud puddle. If you don?t have a lighter, you may decide on utilizing the traditional flame from friction approach. It?s weird that the video was made to enable us to survive in an unfamiliar territory, but little do we know that over a billion people live their lives day by day doing this just to barely exist. In our setup today, most of people use whole house water filtration systems to improve the water?s hygiene and aesthetic qualities. This applies to all residential water consumption: drinking, bathing, cleaning, etc. However, I would advice that you purify the water in proportion to the amount that you?ll be using or point-of-use water devices. Clearly, one will save more money by investing in home water filtration systems than in purchasing bottled water (plus you?ll be helping Mother Nature for a study shows that only 14% of the plastic bottles are recycled, the rest goes to the dump.) The market offers a variety of filter devices; there are those mechanical, carbon, ceramic and glass. The mechanical filter includes strainers characterized by fine mesh screens to take out large-sized impurities and the sediment filters, as the name suggest, strain particles such as dirt and sand. The downside for both of these is that it cannot eliminate biological pathogens or those smaller impurities. Activated Carbon (AC) Filtration. More often than not, this is the choice for residential water treatment. This filtration works by removing the unwanted taste and odor and other harmful contaminants. Unfortunately, only a few certified ACs are specially manufactured to effectively eliminate heavy metals like lead. Generally, it removes chemicals and gases. Strainers made of ceramic and glass possess fine pores that halt bacteria from integrating with the house water though they do not remove chemicals, poor tastes, odors, or pollutants. Another treatment method is the Reverse Osmosis (RO). This utilizes the normal house water pressure to force said liquid through a semipermiable membrane that isolates the contaminants from the water. This may be used in itself or as part of a system. In the long run, the filter needs to be replaced due to sediment build up. The last two, AC and RO are matching processes. When joined together, the product would be an effective filtration against the broadest range of contaminants and impurities. These are only a few of the filtration system available in the market. Just remember the things that need to be considered when selecting a system; these are the water source, intended use, amount of water to be used and the performance of the system against broad contaminants.
