Things I've Learned about Water Heaters

For the last six months or so I've been engaged in a project -- a project to research the various types and models of hot water heaters and heating systems. I did this because I knew that we would have to purchase a new hot water heater soon for our own home. Along the way, I've learned a number of things about hot water heaters --

The first thing that I learned -- and I learned this when I was researching Bosch tankless water heaters and Rinnai tankless water heaters -- is that with the latest models, enormous energy savings are possible. Particularly with the tankless models, because the unit does not need to continually operate to keep a water tank reservoir to a certain temperature. I learned that certain types of water heating systems can reduce your water heating bill from 60% -- and if you purchase a solar-powered hot water heating system you can realize a near 100% savings!

Another thing that I learned is that with a good, whole house tankless water heater system, you will never have that unpleasant experience of running out of hot water in the middle of the shower. These units are designed to heat your incoming water to the desired temperature as you need it -- so if you take a shower for an hour, you will never run out! By the way, Reliance tankless water heaters and Rheem water heaters (both excellent choices!) make high efficiency water heater units, as well as other manufacturers such as Titan. Electric water heater models are also available for those homes where natural gas is not used.

Another thing that I learned about today's high efficiency water heater units is that they are compatible with other, smaller, point-of-use water heaters. These smaller, instant-on hot water heaters can be installed anywhere you need them. For example, if you want to install a hot water faucet in your garage -- perhaps for cleaning up -- but only have a cold water line available-- you can install an instant hot water heater to the cold water line and enjoy the benefits of the hot water faucet without the additional expense of making major plumbing changes.

In fact, perhaps the most effective and efficient approach for today's home is to use a whole house tankless water heater to provide basic hot water for the entire household, supplementing that system with one or more instant hot water heaters where needed -- especially to help out during periods of high demand, or where the hot water tap is located some distance away from the central tank.

One final thought: today's generation of water heaters are also very environmentally-friendly. The major components on these units can be repeatedly serviced by qualified professionals, toxic and harmful materials are not used in their construction, and most components are fully recyclable. So regardless of your needs, if you know that your existing hot water system is in need of replacement -- don't wait any longer, purchase a new one right away. You'll be glad you did!
