Danger of Drinking Too Much Water

With all the advice being tossed around on how we should drink lots of water, it may be surprising to some that drinking too much water in a short time can kill you. If you consume water at such a rate that the kidneys and skin cannot excrete it, the end result is that your blood will be thinned so much that it is unable to support life.

Hyponatremia is the word for it and it means that there is an insufficient concentration of salts in the blood. Our blood sodium concentration should be between 135-145 millimoles per litre. When the blood becomes waterlogged, that water is drawn out into the cells, which soak it up like a sponge and swell in the process. The rest of the body can cope, but not the brain cells. There is nowhere for them to expand to.

Rapid and severe swelling of the brain cells leads to seizures, coma and respiratory arrest. Then comes brain stem herniation where the stem of the brain is strangled by the swelling. Death is the result. Not a pleasant picture is it? So the next time you feel guilty for not drinking those eight big glasses of water, don't.
