Water Safety Advocates Warn of Chlorine-Breast Cancer Link
Vancouver, WA (PRWEB) September 25, 2007 -- According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. An estimated 178,000 women will develop breast cancer this year alone. Amid these alarming statistics, a company that provides products and education is launching a global effort to warn women of cancer risks associated with drinking and bathing in chlorinated water.
October is International Breast Cancer Awareness Month and friendsofwater.com (http://www.friendsofwater.com) has launched its PINK campaign to draw attention to the issue with water filter products and information through the free online ezine, The Waterfall.
"A woman dies of breast cancer in the United States every 13 minutes and studies show that there is a high correlation between chlorine and breast cancer," said Tim Hickey, co-founder of friendsofwater.com.
"We're committed to educating others about this link and providing solutions to reduce the risks," he added.
With its PINK campaign, friendsofwater.com is offering two new products designed to eliminate 99% of chlorine in bath and shower water. The PINK TurboShower filter and PINK Bath Ball filter are exclusive to the company and contain a patented KDF filtration system designed to block more contaminants than traditional filters.
Full-color waterproof cards from Susan G. Komen for the Cure will also accompany orders, illustrating how to perform a breast self-exam (BSE).
"We encourage women who'd like to reduce breast cancer risks to use our TurboShower and Bath Ball," said Corinne Hickey, who founded the company with Mr. Hickey.
"These filters are inexpensive ways to protect against inhaling and absorbing chlorine while showering and bathing," she added.
The links between chlorine and breast cancer (http://www.friendsofwater.com) have been well established by multiple findings, including a 1992 study in Hartford, Connecticut. The results found that women with breast cancer had 50% to 60% higher levels of chlorinated by-products in their breast tissue than women without the disease.
"Everyone should be concerned about findings like this, but unfortunately, people are not properly informed," noted Mr. Hickey. "The goal of our campaign is to get this message across to as many people as possible, particularly women."
In addition to water filtration, friendsofwater.com also provides products and information on a wide spectrum of water-related issues, including conservation and gardening.
