Five Tips for Students Preparing for Final Exams -- Dr. Carol Locke Offers Healthy Study Techniques for Students

Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 24, 2007 -- Late hours cramming for finals at the end of the school year can wreak havoc on a high school or college student's mind and body, according to Dr. Carol Locke, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist. She offers five easy and natural tips to help students raise their GPAs by breaking the curve on their final exams and for parents worried about their kids' unhealthy study habits.

"It is a tough time of the year for students -- school is ending, summer vacation is around the corner and spring fever is contagious. Students end up eating poorly, staying up late and fitting a whole semester of school work into one night," said Dr. Locke. "It's not too late in the game for students to improve their performance by following some smart and healthy techniques."

Dr. Locke suggests the following:

1.    Take three Omega-3s. Omega-3s are essential elements of brain cell membranes, which are important for the transmission of brain signals. Lack of Omega-3 in the body can cause a communication breakdown in the brain. Several recent studies have demonstrated that Omega-3s help young people to focus and enhance mood, two critical elements in studying and retaining information. Taking three high concentrate Omega-3s high in EPA before starting to study can be a profound positive influence, Dr. Locke reports.

2.    Get up and exercise. Physical exercise stimulates brain activity, increases clarity and actually helps the brain encode memory so Dr. Locke recommends that students take a break from the books and spend at least 12 minutes exercising every four hours. Get the heart rate up for better memory and performance on the tests.

3.    Eat healthy. Fueling your body with proper nutrition leads to better grades. Stay away from candy bars and chips while studying. Instead snack on blueberries that are a natural brain booster, a healthy nutrition bar or a good protein meal. Avoid high fats before the test; they can make you feel sleepy.

4.    Eat dark chocolate to boost brainpower. Dark chocolate is a rich source of flavanols with powerful antioxidant activity. Cocoa flavanols have been shown to increase blood flow to the brain and enhance neurotransmitter activity, increasing mental alertness and reducing mental fatigue. Boost your brainpower by drinking hot chocolate while studying for finals and having dark chocolate before the test.

5.    Listen to classical music. Listening to classical music has an impact on intelligence and productivity. Classical music stimulates the mind, relieves anxiety, helps with concentration and reduces stress. Forget rock and roll and put Mozart or Bach into your iPod while studying, advises Dr. Locke.

"Finally, catch at least a few hours sleep - it gives your memory time to absorb all those facts you have been studying," Dr. Locke concludes. "These tips not only will help with the stressful time of final exams, but will have long term health benefits."
